While it is true that advances in science have made an impact in saving lives and made HIV/AIDS treatable for those who have access to care, the epidemic is far from over. An estimated 1.1 million people in the US are living with HIV. Broward and Miami-Dade counties have some of the highest HIV rates in the nation, and Florida continues to see an increase in new cases despite efforts to stop the spread of this disease. Many don’t know they have it; and many lack the resources to get medication or find assistance programs.

The Pride Center is one of about a dozen NONPROFIT HIV/AIDS service organizations who are the recipients of the funds raised to carry out their mission in this fight. The Pride Center also serves the community in many other ways, with a comprehensive Wellness program, Active Aging activities and support, a hub for support group meetings, office space for 10 other community organizations, a 48 unit LGBT-focused supportive housing apartment building, and a safe space for the community to gather.
Almost there:
As the Facilities Manager for The Pride Center campus, my very job (and everyone else’s there) relies on fundraisers like this to pay our salaries, our insurance, and purchase goods and services to keep The Center moving forward and enabling our innovative programs. As a nonprofit, it’s tough to make ends meet these days. It’s tough for employees of nonprofits like myself to make ends meet too.
And Finally:
This year, I’m unable to walk due to my ongoing back issues following surgery in November. But that won’t stop me from supporting our team and the hundreds of participants gathering on Ft Lauderdale beach to walk the 5K on March 9th.
Two things to remember:
1. AHF matches DOLLAR FOR DOLLAR up to $500k! $5 becomes $10, $25 becomes $50….
2. March 9th is just the beginning, all funds raised by April 30th are eligible for the match.
I hope you will join in supporting those walking (and those of us walking in spirit) to make a difference in the lives of thousands who need services and support organizations like ours who are on the front lines day in and day out. Together, we ARE making a difference!
